Charters Towers Regional Council has moved restoration of the historic World Theatre into its next phase, with repair works now underway after detailed designs were completed to address extensive storm damage.

The landmark venue has remained closed since February 2025, when a major regional weather event caused significant water damage that rendered the building unsafe.

Council says it is working closely with contractors to deliver the restoration works, which include replacing the theatre’s roofing, air-conditioning systems, furnishings and flooring, along with repairs to internal walls.

Charters Towers Mayor Liz Schmidt stressed the cultural importance of the project for the community.

“The World Theatre is a treasured cultural landmark and a vital part of our region’s identity,” she said.

“We understand the community’s eagerness to see it reopened, and Council is committed to ensuring its revival.

“With funding secured and works advancing, we are confident the Theatre will once again serve as a hub for arts and entertainment.”

The World Theatre remains one of Charters Towers’ most recognisable heritage landmarks, widely regarded as a cultural centrepiece that has hosted countless performances, films and major community events for the region.

Mrs Schmidt thanked the community for their patience while the process has been underway for The World Theatre.

“We sincerely thank the community for its patience and support throughout this process,” she said.

“Your understanding has been invaluable, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the World Theatre once the restoration is complete.”

Council has secured $2.3 million in external funding to support the restoration works, a contribution that significantly eases the financial burden on local ratepayers while ensuring the long-term preservation and reopening of one of the community’s most valued cultural venues.
