Standing Against Sexual Assault - FULL ARTICLE

October marks Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM), with Prospect Community Services urging locals to come together to stand against sexual violence.

Figures from 2024 show there were 40,087 recorded victims of sexual assault across Australia, a 10 percent increase from the previous year and the highest victimisation rate on record.

Prospect Community Services stressed the importance of raising awareness, noting that sexual violence affects people of all ages and genders, whether at home, in relationships, or in the wider community.

A Prospect Community Services spokesperson said the Domestic and Family Violence Team provides practical assistance for those affected, including access to counselling, referrals to the Townsville Sexual Assault Response Team, and safety planning support.

“The Domestic and Family Violence Team at Prospect Community Services offers comprehensive support for individuals affected by sexual assault and domestic violence,” the spokesperson said.

“Our team provides compassionate advocacy and practical assistance, including referrals to specialist counselling, access to the Townsville Sexual Assault Response Team (SART), and help with safety planning.

“We also support clients in making police statements, offer emotional support during critical moments, and can assist with safety upgrades to homes.

“Our focus is on empowering individuals through a trauma-informed, client-centred approach that prioritises safety, dignity, and recovery.”

While October is also recognised as Queensland Seniors Month, the two campaigns run side by side, each highlighting different but important issues for the community.

The Prospect Community Services Spokesperson emphasised the importance of SAAM, highlighting the concerning prevalence of sexual violence.

“SAAM educates the public about the prevalence and impact of sexual assault,” the spokesperson said.

“Many people don’t realise how widespread it is — globally, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men experience some form of sexual violence in their lifetime.

“Awareness breaks down myths and misconceptions, helping society better understand what sexual assault is and how it affects survivors.

“Survivors often feel isolated and afraid to speak up.

“SAAM creates a platform for their voices to be heard, believed, and supported.

“It reminds them they are not alone — that help, healing, and justice are possible.

“Through education and community engagement, SAAM encourages conversations about consent, respect, and healthy relationships.”
